Kyushu: The Inferno 九州 爆発的な観光

Kyushu, or as we affectionately dubbed it, "Ramen-Land with Bonus Steaming Volcanoes," is apparently Japan's third-biggest island. Who knew? All we cared about was the promise of soupy noodles, suspiciously bubbly beaches, and mountains that looked like they'd just finished a dramatic opera. We had a whole 2 weeks of freedom this spring break, so naturally, we pointed our compass north to the ski mountains, and than south towards the geothermal energy of Kyushu.

First stop: Miyazaki, where the beaches stretched out like a very long, sandy welcome mat. Our resident surf-obsessed Ty-kun, practically hyperventilated at the sight of the Pacific rollers. Despite the weather doing its best impression of a leaky faucet, we couldn't pry him from the waves. 

He was out there looking like a soggy sea otter, while we admired the scenery and secretly wished we'd packed more indoor activities. Three days felt like a blink, mostly because Ty spent 90% of it searching for the perfect wave…

Next up: waterfalls! Maruo Falls at Kirishima sounded majestic, and it did not disappoint. Apparently, everyone else was busy... doing something else? Anyway, it was just us and the cascading water, which was pretty awesome. 

Then Ty, bless his surfing heart, decided the slippery rocks looked like a prime spot to practice his moves. We mostly just held our breath and hoped he wouldn't end up in the awesome falls.

Post-aquatic shenanigans, our stomachs were rumbling louder than a distant volcano. Luckily, we stumbled upon a roadside ramen joint run by the sweetest "obachan" (granny) and her feline overlord. This woman was a legend. She fed us like we were long-lost relatives, kept calling Lina "chibi-chan" (which Lina took as a compliment, mostly), regaled us with her life story (involving a life choice between nursing and ramen after her husband’s departure), and somehow managed to completely screw up our order. But hey, cheap food and entertainment! Ninety minutes and several confused slurps later, we wobbled into our Kagoshima hotel, greeted by the ominous, smoky gaze of the Sakurajima volcano.

Kagoshima city was our playground for two glorious days, which we maximized with an epic road trip to the Ibusuki sand hot springs. Picture this: being buried alive in hot beach sand. It's like a spa treatment designed by moles, and surprisingly invigorating (or maybe we were just too hot to complain). Fueled by a surprisingly decent Italian meal (because, why not for 2 vegetarians in our crew?), we then bravely ventured towards the Kaimondake volcano, aka "Satsuma Fuji." This pointy peak was indeed stunning, and we spent a good chunk of time hiking it and pretending we were mountaineers, striking heroic poses at various viewpoints.

The Kaimon Sanroku Nature Park also introduced us to the Tokara horse, which can only be described as nature's little comedians. These "funny looking ponies" were apparently the ancestors of Japanese horses, and their up-close aroma was... memorable. Let's just say we appreciated the fresh volcanic air afterwards. By this point, we were operating on fumes and the promise of local Kagoshima yakitori and shochu, which, spoiler alert, did not disappoint.

The next day involved a ferry trip to get chummy with the Sakurajima volcano. This fiery fella apparently likes to erupt on a daily basis, which is both dramatic and slightly concerning when you're on a small boat nearby. We dodged a major eruption by mere hours, which felt like a win (and a relief for our flight schedule). Surprisingly, the volcano was actually crowded, mostly with enthusiastic teenagers and a few hardy backpackers. But honestly, compared to the summer stampede on Shimoda beach, this was practically a private viewing.

We wrapped up our Kyushu escapade with two nights on the other side of Kagoshima bay, embarking on yet another road trip to the southernmost tip of the main Japanese islands. 

Maybe one day, I'll cycle all the way down there from Hokkaido. But for now, Kyushu, thanks for the memories, the questionable culinary surprises, the slightly terrifying volcanic activity, and most importantly, for not blowing your top while we were visiting! You were a blast (pun intended!).

九州、あるいは私たちが愛情を込めて「湯気」を立てる火山付​​きラーメンランド」と呼んでいるこの島は、日本で3番目に大きな島らしい。まさか！？ 私たちにとって、スープの効いた麺、怪しいほど泡立つビーチ、そしてまるで爆発的なオペラを終えたばかりのような山々への期待だけが、この地の素晴らしさだった。この春休みは丸々2週間も自由だったので、当然のことながら、コンパスを北にスキー場へ、そして南に九州の地熱エネルギーへと向けた。

 

最初の目的地は宮崎。そこは、まるで長い砂浜のウェルカムマットのように続くビーチだった。サーフィンに夢中な我が家のタイくんは、太平洋のうねりを見て過呼吸気味だった。男雨のような天気だったにもかかわらず、彼を波から引き離すことはできなかった。

彼はまるでびしょ濡れのラッコのように水面に浮かんでいた。私たちは景色を眺めながら、もっと屋内アクティビティを用意しておけばよかったと密かに後悔していた。 3日間はあっという間に感じました。タイが90%の時間を完璧な波探しに費やしていたからです…

 

次は滝！霧島の丸尾滝は壮大そうに聞こえましたが、期待を裏切りませんでした。どうやら他の皆は忙しそうで…何か他のことに？とにかく、そこにいたのは私たちと滝だけ。本当に素晴らしかったです。それから、サーフィン好きのタイが、滑りやすい岩場が技の練習に最適だと言い出しました。私たちは息を呑み、彼がこの素晴らしい滝に落ちないことを祈るばかりでした。

 

水遊びの後、お腹は遠くの火山の音よりも大きく鳴り響いていました。幸運なことに、道端のラーメン屋に偶然出会いました。そこは、とても優しい「おばあちゃん」と、その猫の飼い主さんが経営していました。この女性は伝説的でした。彼女はまるで昔会った親戚のように私たちに食事を与え、リナを「チビちゃん」と呼び続け（リナはそれを褒め言葉として受け止めていた）、夫の死後、看護師とラーメンのどちらかを選んだという人生経験談を披露し、どういうわけか私たちの注文を完全に間違えてしまった。まあ、安い食事とエンターテイメントは最高だ！90分、何度か混乱しながらすすった後、よろよろと鹿児島のホテルに到着すると、不気味な煙を吐く桜島が目の前に広がっていた。

 

鹿児島市は私たちの2日間の遊び場となり、指宿砂むし温泉への壮大なドライブ旅行でその時間を最大限に満喫した。想像してみてほしい。熱い砂浜に生き埋めにされるような気分だ。まるでモグラが考案したスパトリートメントのようで、驚くほど爽快だ（あるいは、暑すぎて文句を言えなかっただけかもしれない）。驚くほど美味しいイタリアンでエネルギーをチャージした後（というのも、私たちの仲間にはベジタリアンが2人いるので、仕方ないですよね？）、勇気を出して開聞岳（別名「薩摩富士」）を目指しました。この尖った山頂は実に息を呑むほど美しく、私たちは登山家になったつもりで、多くの時間をハイキングに費やし、様々な展望台で勇敢なポーズを決めました。

 

開聞山麓自然公園では、トカラ馬にも出会いました。まさに自然の小さなコメディアンと言えるでしょう。この「面白い見た目のポニー」は、どうやら日本の馬の祖先にあたるそうで、間近で嗅いだその香りは…忘れられないものでした。その後は、新鮮な火山の空気を満喫しました。この時点では、私たちは燃料切れで、地元鹿児島の焼き鳥と焼酎を期待していましたが、ネタバレ注意、期待を裏切らない出来栄えでした。

 

翌日は、桜島と触れ合うためフェリーに乗りました。この火の玉はどうやら毎日噴火するらしく、近くを小さな船で航行していると、ドラマチックでありながら少し不安にもなります。私たちはわずか数時間で大噴火を回避できたので、まさに勝利の気分でした（そしてフライトスケジュールの負担も軽減されました）。驚いたことに、火山は実際には人でごった返しており、ほとんどが元気いっぱいのティーンエイジャーと、少数の屈強なバックパッカーでした。でも正直なところ、夏の下田海岸の混雑に比べれば、これはほぼプライベートな眺めでした。

 

私たちの九州旅行は、鹿児島湾の反対側で2泊して締めくくり、日本列島最南端への新たなロードトリップに出発しました。いつか北海道からそこまで自転車で行くかもしれません。でも今のところは、九州の皆さん、思い出、ちょっと疑問に思う料理のサプライズ、少し恐ろしい火山活動、そして何よりも、私たちが滞在中に怒らなかったことに感謝します！最高でした（ダジャレです！）。
